GlassProtech FAQ's About Our Product & Service
What is window film?
Window Film is a base of clear polyester that is either dyed, extruded or metallized. It has a range of benefits including reducing heat and glare from the sun, increasing comfort and security and minimising energy usage.
Can I install window film myself?
Although it is possible for a practical person to install the standard range of window films it is recommended that an experienced installer should be utilised. Apart from ensuring an acceptable aesthetic finish it will mean that a full warranty can be obtained.
Why use an experienced or certified installer?
The use of an experienced installer will ensure that the installation will meet all the stringent industry standards applicable. These cover all aspects of the installation from visible appearance through to thermal compatibility to make sure the installation does not cause any detrimental effect to the glazing system.
Is window film suitable for existing buildings?
Yes film is suitable for both new and existing buildings however its greatest use is being retrofitted in existing buildings.
Is window film bullet proof?
Window films are not bullet proof, blast proof or burglar proof. However they will give a greater level of safety and security when used for these purposes. You should always ask for the appropriate certification when using window film for these reasons.
How is window film maintained once installed?
Once installed window film should be cleaned in a similar way to glass and a soapy water solution and squeegee are ideal. However abrasives of any type should be avoided.
Does window film improve U and G values of glazing?
Yes film will improve both the heat gain and heat loss properties of the glazing system. Technological advances in window film now mean that there are films available that dramatically improve the insulation performance of existing glass without the need for replacement.
How do Low E or insulating films work?
Low E Films work much in the same way as the sun control films except that they offer an increased performance against cold weather heat loss. The construction of these films reflects more of the interior room heat back into the room where it is needed. This improves personal comfort by reducing cold spots near windows and can help save on fuel costs, especially in commercial buildings.
Does window film cause glass to break?
The application of window Films will increase the temperature of sunlit glass which will increase the stress on the glass edges. The quality of those glass edges and several other factors (external shading, interior shading, glass history, type of film, size/shape of glass, indoor/outdoor temperature) all contribute to the potential risk of glass breakage.
It is essential that the correct film is used and our years of experience with applying Window Films to different types of glass enables us to make proper film/glass recommendations and minimize the potential for glass breakage.
Does window film stop fading?
Nothing completely stops fading. Window Films are designed to help reduce the major causes of fading (ultra violet light, visible light, and solar heat), thus prolonging the life of your furnishings. As a general rule of thumb, ultra violet (UV) is approximately 40% of the cause, visible light is about 25%, and heat about 25%. The remaining 10% can be attributed to humidity, pollutants, interior lights, dye stability, and more.
